Holuba, Lovett Earn Preseason All-America Recognition
Kurt Holuba and John Lovett, two of the three captains for the reigning Ivy League champion Princeton football team, have been named to the 2017 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team, it was announced July 31.
Lovett, who earned First-Team All-America honors last fall after winning the Bushnell Cup as the 2016 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, earned Preseason First-Team recognition, while Holuba, a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year honors, was named to the Preseason Second Team.
Lovett led the FCS and broke Keith Elias’ team single-season record with 20 rushing touchdowns last season. He also threw 10 touchdowns and caught one, meaning he accounted for 31 touchdowns during Princeton’s run to an 11th Ivy League championship (five Ivy teams scored 30 or fewer). Lovett accounted for a Princeton-record seven touchdowns in a win at Cornell, and he accounted for at least two touchdowns in every Ivy League game this season.
Holuba started on the defensive line and led the Ivy League with seven sacks in conference play, which helped lead the Princeton defense to the No. 1 Ivy ranking in both total and scoring defense. The Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after a three-sack performance against Harvard, recorded at least a half sack in five of the last six games, and he recorded 34 tackles on the defensive line.
Princeton will open its 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 16, in a 12 pm showdown against the University of San Diego. Single-game tickets will go on sale starting Tuesday, Aug. 1.
